Insomnia in Perimenopause

Insomnia and poor sleep quality are two of the most common issues I see in clinic for perimenopausal women. Sleep is a fundamental pillar of good health. Poor sleep can have a severe impact on your quality of life, affecting everything from energy to focus and mood.

A recent study explored the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating perimenopausal insomnia. A small group of women in perimenopause received a course of acupuncture treatment over four weeks.

Participants experienced significant improvements in sleep quality and showed reduced levels of stress-related hormones including cortisol. Additionally, acupuncture helped balance reproductive hormones, increasing oestrogen levels and decreasing FSH and LH, with statistically significant differences. This study highlights acupuncture as a safe, effective treatment for perimenopausal insomnia.

Chinese herbal formulas, targetted nutrients and lifestyle changes can be included during this time to build strength and vitality. If you’re experiencing perimenopausal symptoms like insomnia, acupuncture is a natural and effective way to find relief,  supporting your wellbeing during this important transition.
